Young Makers Program

As we prepare for our next TEDxManhattanBeach on the theme of Makers the following caught our eye.

The Young Makers Program intends to connect like-minded young people with adult mentors and fabricators and to organize opportunities for kids to dream up and develop projects for Maker Faire each year. We encourage kids to develop projects based on their own interests and ideas. Projects have included furniture that doubles as a hamster habitat, a fire-breathing dragon, a seesaw water pump, an animatronic galloping horse, and a mobile spy camera. We all work together to create a collaborative culture of creativity, innovation and experimentation. In the Young Makers Program, there are no winners and losers; the focus is on exhibition, not competition. Just like Maker Faire, anything that’s cool is fair game.

These are some of the projects that came out of the program in 2011.

This is a 10 minute PBS News Documentary “Can DIY Movement Fix a Crisis in U.S. Science Education?“.

If that is to long for you then here is 2 minute mini-documentary.

This is a possible list of the equipment we would put in a Maker Space.

Our goal is to create a Maker Space in our community that is for everyone, both young and old.

The Impact of Kickstarter, Creative Commons & Creators Project

The internet has intensified connections between people across the planet. In this episode we take a look at the impact of this new inter-connectivity on the art world. Traditional funding models are dissolving, new forms of expressing ownership have arisen to accommodate for remix culture, and artists are finding ways to connect physical art experiences and traditions to the internet. In the digital era, the experience of art from the perspective of the artist and the art audience is shifting rapidly, and bringing more people into the creative process.
