Results of South Bay Transportation Brain Storming Session

On Thursday September 30, 2010 a group of 37 TEDxers enjoyed an evening of discussion and debate around the issues of transportation.

Following the TED Talks we broke into five groups that discussed transportation planning ideas that we would like to see introduced in the South Bay.

Here is the summary of the points discussed.

Congestion Pricing. Introduce variable road pricing to try and reduce traffic at peak times.

Single Transit District for Greater Los Angeles. Create a single transit to allow a single ticket to give access to all the systems.

Integrate Buses with Metro System. Ensure all buses link with metro system and create transit hubs at the metro stations.

Create East West Transit Corridors. Presently all public transportation systems run in a north – south direction in the South Bay. Need to create East-West transit along Rosecrans, Marine, Manhattan Beach Blvd and Artesia. These could be bus routes or bike routes.

Financial Incentives to Go Green. Create financial incentives to walk, bike, car pool or use mass transit. Perhaps provide tax rebates to buy bikes or electric cars.

Support South Bay Bike Coalition Regional Planning Effort. Participate in the South Bay Bike Coalition planning meetings and help ensure a great solution for the South Bay. Create dedicated bike paths painted on the road – perhaps along Marine or another east-west road.

Southern California Association of Governments. Lobby the regional organization Southern California Association of Governments and potentially attend the 2010 Transportation Summit.

Notice

Many items were discussed and the above is based on the notes I have. I probably missed about half of the good ideas. Sorry. Email me or comment if I missed something.

Transportation – How We Get From Here to There

We will be exploring why people walk, cycle, use public transport and drive and how they make those decisions.

Afterwords we will be discussing how our local environment impacts our personal decisions on transportation.

Tickets and Refunds

The event is $10 to attend. We need to ask for the $10 in advance as we have had an increasing number of people that reserve a ticket and do not come to the event. As the events have all been sold out it means that people that want to come are not able to do so. In addition we are not able to cover our costs as we buy food on the basis of how many people have reserved a ticket.

We will not be refunding the ticket price if you are not able to come. Please feel free to sell, or give, your ticket to a friend.

Venue

The event will be held at the Creative Arts Center, 1560 Manhattan Beach Boulevard, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266.

Drinks

What do we mean by drinks? As our new home is owned by the City of Manhattan Beach we have applied to and be approved by the City for a license to serve beer and wine. We will also, of course, be serving non-alcoholic drinks.

Parking and Transportation

Please park in the lot adjacent to the Creative Arts Center which is only accessible from Manhattan Beach Boulevard if you are driving east.

If you can carpool, bike or walk to the event everyone will benefit :)

Community Design

Community Design will explore the ideas that link architecture, zoning and street lay out decisions with community interactions and happy people. Why do we choose to go some places just to enjoy the location and why do we avoid other places. How major roads prevent or impede walkers and cyclists.

Community Design incorporates some of the theme ideas from the brain storming session at the TEDxManhattanBeach Social on August 4, 2010. Specifically the idea about Community Design is how our design decisions impact transportation, education, slow food, obesity, families, isolation, community and lots more. We hope that the conversation will help us all create a better community for us to all enjoy living in.

Tickets

The event is free to attend. We will be asking, at the door, for a $10 / person contribution towards the cost of the beer, wine and food that we will be providing.

The courtyard at the hotel is outside and has a capacity for only 50 people.

Ideas for Future Events

On Wednesday August 4, 2010 a group of 39 TEDxers enjoyed an evening of Creativity. Prior to the presentation we had an amazing hour of music from Patrick’s Band.

Following the TED Talks we broke into seven groups and brainstormed ideas for future TEDxManhattanBeach events. I have named the groups after colors for reasons that are unknown. I have listed the ideas (based on the notes that were given to me) and linked to TED Talks, YouTube and Wikipedia on the subjects when I found a video or article that appealed to me (in other words no real science). If you have suggestions for links or articles please add a comment or send an email with a link to the TED Talk, other video or article.

I am really excited about all the ideas and we will use these ideas to build our future sessions – thank you everyone.
