About Susan Burden

Susan M. Burden is CEO of the Beach Cities Health District, which serves Redondo, Manhattan and Hermosa Beach. She provides strategic leadership and direction to all functions of the South Bay’s premier preventive health organization. Ms. Burden oversees core prevention services that span a healthy life, from infancy through older adulthood.

Prior to BCHD, Ms. Burden served as an executive with Aspen Education Group in Cerritos, California. Aspen Education Group is a national leader in service for youth at risk. Ms. Burden has served in hospital management and has overseen large community clinic systems. She is a strong advocate for preventive health care as the foundation for all health care reform.

Ms. Burden was graduated with honors from Chapman University with a Master of Health Administration degree. She has since returned to Chapman University as an instructor focusing on current issues in health care and teaching graduate students strategic planning.
Active in the community, Ms. Burden is the recipient of a Scroll of Recognition from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for her leadership in developing community-based training programs for mental health, youth services and law enforcement agencies. Additionally, she was recognized by the Mental Health Association of Orange County for her volunteer work address¬ing mental health and homelessness; and she is the recipient of the James J. McWilliams Tough Love Award from the National Council on Alcoholism for advocacy in treatment of chemically dependent adults. Ms. Burden also has served on the Redondo Beach Salvation Army Board.

Currently, Ms. Burden serves on the Manhattan Beach School District Substance Abuse Task Force, the Manhattan Beach School District Medical Advisory Board, the Redondo Beach Round Table, the Redondo Beach Round Table Executive Committee and the board of the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce.
